The Secrets of Market Research

This month we continue to explore JIN partner organizations that benefit our members. The Jackson Makerspace is Jackson’s most fantastic place for makers, entrepreneurs and inventors to work on and get help with, making their idea or product. This meeting is a reintroduction to the Makerspace and their new facility.

We are continuing to explore Inventor partners and groups with whom we are associated. This month the Jackson District Library will be working with us to find out “Who Will Buy My Invention”, and how do I find my market.

Every inventor needs to know the answer to this and other basic market development questions! Market research generally focuses on three broad areas: target markets, industry or market trends, and competition. For each area of market research, the Library offers a number of information sources, reference books, databases, and recommended Internet sites. Specific market research may require more than one type of source; our library speaker will reveal the secrets to successfully mining the business resources at the Jackson Public Library.

2019 Membership dues are due $45.00 keeps you in know of one of the most significant inventor groups in the country! Your dues help us cover the minimal costs to keep this group going and providing services for you.

Sept. 25 meeting: Approaches to Licensing Your Invention

There is not a “one size fits all” strategy for turning a clever idea into extra cash. Inventors, like the inventions they create, come in many shapes and varieties. However, many inventors at some point consider turning over their invention to a company in exchange for royalty checks. The great thing about this approach is that it shifts all of the burdens and most of the risks of taking a product to market onto the licensing company. This month, President and Founder of the Lansing Inventors Network (LIN), David Fedewa, will be sharing his licensing experiences with JIN attendees. David’s approach to inventing is to license his inventions to the big corporations and let them do all the heavy lifting. He has licensed four ideas to date and generates revenue via royalties. David graduated from Aquinas College of Grand Rapids, MI with a Bachelor’s of Science in Business Administration and a Bachelor’s of Science in Economics. David is also a founding board member of the Michigan Inventors Coalition.
